Sean “Diddy” Combs Opens Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School
Sean “Diddy” Combs apparently moves in silence and I love it! For the past five years Diddy has had something up his sleeve and it’s finally officially! This fall he will launch Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School. Dr. Steve Perry, Founder and Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School will oversee the school, not to mention Danita Jones will be the school’s Principal, and Iyanla Vanzant and Rev. Georgiette Morgan-Thomas are on the school’s board.
Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School will be a free, public school for grades 6 through 12, and will aim to provide a year-round, college prep education and will focus on social justice. Yes, social justice, by beginning with students identifying a problem in middle school, and working on a “social justice project” throughout high school. The teaching staff will be referred to as “Illuminators” and social justice will be key. Why illuminators? “Teachers are called illuminators because they’re more than just instructors.” Danita Jones
“Creating this school is a dream come true for me. I want to impact the lives of young people in my community and build future leaders. The first step is offering access to quality education. All our children should be able to pursue their dreams.” Sean “Diddy” Combs
Diddy started the prep work for the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School in 2011. Having Dr. Steve Perry on board is phenomenal as well. Since the opening of his school (Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut), in 2006 Dr. Perry has had 100 percent of the graduating seniors all of which have been admitted to four-year colleges.
Diddy searched for the best educational models and partners and no one other than Dr. Steve Perry would be the one chosen to over see the school. As Dr. Perry recalls, about six years ago, Diddy said to him, “…No one knows this, but I’ve always wanted to start a school.” That would be as far as the conversation went however, for years, Dr. Perry tried to convince Diddy to start a scholarship or after-school program instead. But Combs was relentless.
Relentless to say the least. The doors to Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School will open this fall, and the deadline date to apply for the upcoming school year is April 01, 2016. Sean “Diddy” Comb is going from hip hop and fashion mogul to education and we can’t wait to celebrate his continued success and impact.
